The Supreme Court of India has announced that on Tuesday, July 11 at 10:30 AM, a constitution bench consisting of the Chief Justice of India, Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul, Justice Sanjiv Khanna, Justice BR Gavai, and Justice Surya Kant will hear the petitions “for directions.” A copy of this notice is in the possession of news.

On March 2, 2020, the Supreme Court last heard arguments in petitions challenging judgements made on August 5, 2019.

The dissolution of the former State of Jammu and Kashmir into two Union Territories (UTs) and the subsequent filing of many cases challenging this action have reached the Supreme Court.

Meanwhile, Jammu and Kashmir’s political parties have expressed their approval of the decision.

We applaud the Supreme Court’s decision to consider applications filed since 2019 that seek to overturn the illegitimate repeal of Article 370. For the sake of the people of J&K, I pray that justice will be preserved and given. The Supreme Court’s decision on Article 370 “maintained that the provision can be abrogated only on the recommendation of the J&K constituent assembly,” as former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti put it in a tweet.

Omar Abdullah, a former chief minister and current vice president of the National Conference, has expressed enthusiasm for the upcoming Supreme Court hearings on Article 370.

“At long last, the bench has taken shape. I hope the hearings start in earnest soon,” Omar tweeted.

Muhammad Yousuf Tarigami, a prominent leader of the CPI(M) and the spokesman for the Peoples Alliance for the Gupkar Declaration, welcomed the move but stated that the choices made on August 5 were made without the approval of the people of J&K.

“Welcoming the Constitutional Bench’s (albeit belated) decision to consider a group of petitions challenging the repeal of Article 370 and the partition of the Historic State.” He said that the decision was unpopular because it violated the constitution and was made without consulting the public.
