Bhat, 31 years old, was one of three troops from the army slain in the Halan, Kulgam operation.

Sepoy Waseem Ahmad Bhat, a native of the Dachigam neighbourhood of Bandipora, was laid to rest with full military honours on Sunday. On Friday, Bhat was killed while on duty in the Halan forest region of the Kulgam district in South Kashmir during an encounter with terrorists.

The 31-year-old Bhat was one of three army men who were critically injured during the Halan Kulgam operation and transported to 92 Base Hospital, where they all later died.

On Sunday morning, GNS cited a close relative as saying that Bhat’s lifeless remains were brought back from the military hospital in Srinagar to his home hamlet of Dachigam Bandipora. At Middle School Dachigam, hundreds of residents and high-ranking representatives from the Army, Police, and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) came to pay their respects and see the last rituals, which were performed with full religious and military honours.

Women all around the city have been mourning the loss of Bhat, a young soldier and talented football player, after his unexpected death. He played football for the Dachigam club, known as the “Iqra Football Club,” for many years.

Waseem has left his wife, whom he wed in November of 2021, behind. His last trip home for Eid was remembered fondly by his loved ones. “His wife is six months pregnant,” Zubair Sarwar Dar, his younger brother, said. Waseem leaves behind a wife, parents, brother, and two married sisters.

Bandipora Police have shown their condolences to the victims’ loved ones after the recent tragedy.

“Bandipora Police stands in solidarity with the bereaved families in this hour of grief. #SaluteToTheBraveHearts for their supreme sacrifice in the line of duty,” said one tweet.
