Srinagar, July 26: Jammu and Kashmir Police arrested a PhD student in South Kashmir’s Kulgam region on Wednesday and said they had uncovered a terrorism recruitment operation.
A police spokesman said that, based on specific information from Kulgam Police, a search was being done for a person with the code name Dr. Sabeel who was trying to attract naive young people from District Kulgam and the places around it to join terrorist groups.
The police in Kulgam set up special teams to track down and look for this person, the spokesman said. After a lot of work, the focus was put on a suspicious car with the number JK18B-4852. When the car’s papers were checked, it turned out that it was being driven by one person: Dr. Rubani Bashir, the son of the late Bashir Ahmed Dar, who lived in Ashmuji, Kulgam. So, a special stop was set up at Ashmuji, and Dr. Rubani was taken into custody. During questions, he said that his code name was Dr. Sabeel and that he was a PhD student at the Central University of Kashmir who had also applied for a job there as an assistant professor.
“During more asking, Dr. Rubani Bashir, also known as Dr. Subeel, said that he has been involved with Jamat-e-Islami since he was a student. He was a member of its student wing, Islamic Jamat-ul-Tulbha (IJT), for 14 years, and then he became a full member of JEI. “Dr. Sabeel’s main way of doing things was to work for banned terrorist groups like HM/JeM behind the scenes,” the spokesman said. “He would find the young people, inspire them, give them money, and then get them ready to join terrorist groups.”
During their probe, the police said it also came to light that Dr. Rubani Bashir, aka Dr. Subeel, had influenced two young people to join the ranks of terrorists. On the basis of what Dr. Rubani Bashir said, two terrorists with ties to the banned terrorist group HM/JeM were caught. Fazil Ahmed Parrey, son of Sheraz Ahmed Parrey, who lives in Ashmuji Bhan, and Tariq Ahmed Naikoo @ Chawla, son of Abdul Ahmed Naikoo, who lives in Check Wattoo Aharabal, have been named as the two men.
Dr. Rubani Bashir was found to have a Chinese pistol, a pistol magazine, and nine 9mm rounds. Fazil Ahmed Parrey was found to have an AK-47 magazine and nineteen AK-47 rounds. A Chinese grenade, 10 AK-47 rounds, and an Alto car with the number plate number JK18B-4852 were also found.
ADGP Kashmir liked what the Kulgam police did to stop this important recruitment scheme.
