Over 6,000 new cancer diagnoses are recorded each year at the Sher-I-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) Soura, which is causing the institute to face a worrisome increase in the number of patients seeking treatment for the disease.

Official statistics indicate that malignancies of the gastrointestinal tract (GI) are the most common form, accounting for 30 percent of all cases. This is followed by cancers of the lung and the breast.
