Rajiv Gandhi, who served as India’s prime minister from 1984 to 1989, set a record for becoming the country’s youngest leader.

In May of 1991, he was killed during a rally in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu by members of the separatist group Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).

Meanwhile, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, who is now in Ladakh, paid floral homage to his father on a cloudy Sunday morning near the sparkling Pangong Tso lake.

After paying his respects to a framed portrait of the former PM with flowers, Rahul spoke to media and remembered a discussion he had with his father, Rajiv Gandhi, in which his grandfather had informed him that Pangong Tso is the most beautiful spot on earth.

“When I was a kid, my father came home from a trip to Pangong Tso with some images of the lake to show me. He assured me that I was at the most stunning location on the planet. My trip to Ladkah during the ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’ was postponed due to unforeseen difficulties. I considered coming back for a lengthier visit at a later date. Rahul Gandhi has said, “I will also be travelling to Kargil and the Nubra Valley.”
