Kupwara: A young woman in the Kandi Khass neighbourhood of Kupwara has shown the way for other women by creating her own source of income via the organic growing of mushrooms.

After obtaining instruction from the Agricultural Department, Bilqeesa Sultan this year set up her very own mushroom farm in her backyard. Dr. Firdous Raina, a researcher at KVK Kupwara, has been a great help to me.He helped me get the mushroom unit set up correctly. Bilqeesa said to Greater Kashmir, “I also received instruction in mushroom farming from Nisar Ahmad, who operates out of a facility in Bramri, Kupwara.

After I completed my training with the Agriculture Department, I was given one hundred bags of compost to use in my mushroom farm. I planted seeds in March, and I’m currently getting a daily harvest of two to three kilogrammes. It’s a complex procedure, so I stay in contact with professionals as often as possible; eventually, I’d want to be able to harvest more than 20 kilogrammes (44 pounds) of crops every day.

According to Bilqeesa, one of the main reasons she decided to pursue mushroom growing was because of the low initial investment and the little amount of labour needed. Bilqeesa, who is earning her Master’s degree in social work from IGNOU, has always had an interest in entrepreneurship. As opposed to being an employee, I would much rather be an employer. According to Bilqeesa, a businessman may make a comfortable living while a government worker can barely get by.
