“On Thursday afternoon, I received a call from an unknown number, and the person pretended to be from some telecom company and asked me to provide Aadhar card details in order to upgrade my 4G connection to 5G,” stated the victim Shahbaz. “I provided them with the details, and later they sent me a link for confirmation,” he said, adding that “as soon as I opened the link and uploaded my bank details, all the money in my account of Rs 4.69 lakh was withdrawn.”

He said that they addressed the relevant Jammu and Kashmir bank branch, and that bank authorities sent them to the cyber police for further inquiry. “We have also filed a complaint with the cyber police station,” Shahbaz’s cousin said.

A bank officer at Jammu and Kashmir Bank Gund verified that the funds were withdrawn by web scammers.

Meanwhile, authorities have urged the public to be vigilant and “not share any details online with any unknown numbers and persons.” The Cyber Police further recommended individuals not to provide anybody over the phone any banking-related personal information such as OTPs, Card Numbers, CVVs, and so on.
