Srinagar, July 3rd: The J&K government has raised the retirement age for J&K university professors from 62 to 65 years. However, the government has included a provision for university teachers to increase their retirement age.

According to an official document, the administrative Council, chaired by J&K Lieutenant Governor (LG) Manoj Sinha, has decided to raise the retirement age of university teachers with a condition.

However, the government has formed a committee led by J&K Chief Secretary Dr. Arun Kumar Mehta to evaluate each case individually and make a judgement on age augmentation on a case-by-case basis.

In this respect, the Higher Education Department (HED) has written a notice to Registrar Jammu University requesting information on the government decision, as reviewed by Greater Kashmir.

According to the government regulation, the performance of university professors must be examined and assessed on a variety of criteria before reaching the age of 62.

“The committee will assess the Professor’s overall performance as well as his/her physical and mental health suitable for teaching and research assignments at the university,” the government decree states.

In addition, the committee will analyse general conduct and behaviour, including integrity and conduct standards as per J&K government Civil Service Regulations.

“The committee will also evaluate the professors on the basis of their teaching contribution, which will be done based on student feedback and new pedagogical approaches adopted in the teaching,” according to the official statement.

The committee will also evaluate professors’ academic contributions, including the number of publications, books, chapters in books, seminars, conferences, and workshops attended, development of new syllabus and courses, patents and consultancy assignments, awards, and fellowships received.

The committee will also assess the academics based on their scientific contributions.

“Number of research publications in reputed journals, number of Ph.D candidates enrolled, number of PhD awarded, and research projects and research fellowships will be assessed,” according to the official statement.

The committee will also evaluate academics’ contributions to the institution, with membership in University committees and contributions to the institution counting towards increasing their retirement age.
