Srinagar, July 25: Divisional Commissioner Kashmir Vijay Kumar Bidhuri stated on Tuesday that the government was serious about removing long-standing restrictions on Muharram processions on two routes in Srinagar areas and that the onus now fell on the Shia community to provide information about who and how many people will participate in the 8th day procession.

Speaking to the media in Srinagar, as reported by the news source Kashmir News Observer (KNO), Bidhuri said that a number of meetings were held to discuss removing the decades-old restrictions on Muharram processions on two routes in Srinagar as there may be some reasons for them.

The ball is now in the hands of the Shia community, who have been requested to submit information on who and how many people are participating in the procession, he added. “We are serious about lifting the restrictions,” he said.

The work on smart city initiatives is ongoing, according to Bidhuri, and many of them will be finished by Independence Day.
