Surat, July 19: On Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi celebrated the opening of the biggest office building in the world, the Surat Diamond Bourse, in Gujarat’s Surat.
Given that Surat is known for producing 90% of the world’s diamonds, the event represented a critical turning point for the diamond industry.
In a tweet, Prime Minister Modi praised the Surat Diamond Bourse as evidence of India’s entrepreneurial spirit while recognizing the energy and expansion of Surat’s diamond sector.
He made a point of saying that the bourse will act as a centre for commerce, innovation, and cooperation, supporting the economy of the nation and generating job possibilities.
Over 65,000 diamond specialists, including cutters, polishers, and merchants, are housed at the Surat Diamond Bourse, a complete hub. It is said to be the biggest office building in the world, surpassing the Pentagon in size with a floor area of more than 7.1 million square feet.
The spectacular 35-acre, 15-story bourse complex has nine rectangular buildings that are linked to one another and radiate out from a central “spine.”
