Srinagar, May 18: Rain fell in the Kashmir Valley and some of the Jammu area today, and the local meteorological service has forecast additional rain and thunderstorms in a few locations throughout the region over the next 24 hours.
An official with the local meteorological service informed GNS that there was a chance of hailstorms and high winds in certain areas at that period.

From May 19-23, he predicted partly overcast skies with isolated showers in the late afternoon and evening.

“No significant rainfall is expected over the next week,” he stated.

Srinagar got 1.2 mm, Qazigund 2.8 mm, Pahalgam 1.3 mm, Kokernag 1.0 mm, Gulmarg 6.2 mm, Banihal 3.0 mm, Katra 0.7 mm, Bhaderwah 1.4 mm, and Batote 0.7 mm of rain in the previous 24 hours as of 0830 local time, according to the official.

He also said that the temperature was 2.3 degrees Celsius higher than average for the summer capital, Srinagar, which was 13.7 degrees Celsius the night before.

According to him, the temperature at Qazigund, the entrance to Kashmir, dropped to 11.0 degrees Celsius rather than the customary 10.0 degrees Celsius the night before.

According to him, Pahalgam, a popular tourist destination in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district, had a low of 7.4 degrees Celsius, 1.5 degrees Celsius more than typical.

He reported an 8.4°C low in Kupwara town, which was 1.7°C colder than average for the north Kashmir region.

The overnight low temperature in Kokernag was 11.2 degrees Celsius, which is 1.2 degrees Celsius higher than average for the area, according to the authorities.

According to him, the famed ski resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district had a low of 4.6 degrees Celsius, down from 6.2 degrees Celsius the night before, and 2.2 degrees Celsius lower than typical.

According to him, the overnight low in Jammu was 24.0°C, which is 0.1°C lower than average for the winter capital of J&K (which is normally 22.6°C).

The low temperature was 13.1 degrees Celsius in Banihal, 1.4 degrees Celsius below normal, 14.7 degrees Celsius over normal in Batote, 1.3 degrees Celsius below normal in Katra, and 1.8 degrees Celsius below normal in Bhaderwah. He claimed the low temperatures at Leh and Kargil, both in Ladakh, were 4.4 and 7.0 degrees Celsius. (GNS)
