Yoga is practised by about 200 students from schools in Baramulla

Srinagar, 21 June The University of Kashmir released a statement on Wednesday saying that a big number of students and faculty members had participated in events commemorating International Day of Yoga.

The event was coordinated by the University’s Office of National Service Scheme and Directorate of Physical Education (DPES) and Sports.


Students from the University of Kashmir and other high schools in the Kashmir valley took part in the massive event, where expert teachers discussed the many ways in which practising Yoga may improve one’s physical and mental health.

The principle of ‘One Earth, One Family, One Future’ (Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam) was emphasised by KU Vice Chancellor Nilofer Khan in her special speech for the International Day of Yoga. She praised the young people of J&K, saying they had the potential to spearhead a statewide movement to raise Yoga’s profile, and promising full backing from the University.

Nisar A. Mir, KU’s registrar, presided over the day’s events and urged students to maintain their devotion to Yoga practise so that they may enjoy the many rewards that come from it, particularly the many positive psychological and physical outcomes associated with Yoga Asanas.

He lauded the annual observance of the IDY by DPES and NSS at the University.

Yoga’s significance was also emphasised by Mehmood A. Khan, dean of the School of Behavioural Sciences, and Majid Zaman, controller of examinations. Wahid Nasru, a member of the CCAS KU faculty, as well as representatives from DPES and NSS, were present.

Students received instruction on the fundamentals of Yoga from professionals like Danishta Mushtaq (Physical Education College, Ganderbal) and Zahoor ul Haq (Lecturer, DPES).

Under the direction of DPES/NSS Coordinator Mussavir Ahmad, Mirza Irshad Hussain Baig, Section Officer, DPES, and Riyaz Ahmad, NSS, arranged the event.
