Jammu & Kashmir should expect mostly dry weather today. A meteorological department official did say that short showers and thunderstorms may hit random parts of J&K in the late afternoon or evening. But he assured me that there is no chance of significant precipitation.

He predicted that the weather will be partly overcast with a chance of rain/thunderstorms in isolated locations on May 15-16. He reaffirmed that significant precipitation is not expected for the following week.

He predicted that rain and thunderstorms will hit here and there from the 17th to the 20th of May.

He also said that Srinagar’s temperature was average for a summer capital, with a low of 10.6 degrees Celsius compared to 10.9 degrees Celsius the night before.

He said that Qazigund, the entrance to Kashmir, had a temperature of 10.0 degrees Celsius, which was 0.8 degrees higher than typical.

He said that the temperature at Pahalgam, a popular tourist destination in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district, dropped to 5.6 degrees Fahrenheit (0.5 degrees Celsius) on Tuesday night, up from 5.0 degrees the night before.

According to him, the mercury dropped to 7.4 degrees Fahrenheit in Kupwara town last night, up from 6.7 degrees the night before; this is 2.2 degrees cooler than average for the north Kashmir region.

The temperature in Kokernag dropped to 9.3 degrees Celsius from 10.5 degrees the night before, which is considered average for the region.

The famed ski resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir’s Baramulla region saw temperatures drop to 3.0 degrees Celsius from 8.0 degrees Celsius the night before. This was 2.5 degrees Celsius cooler than average.

He reported a temperature drop in J-K’s winter capital of Jammu to 22.0°C, down from 23.5°C the night before and 1.5°C below average.

The low temperature was 10.6 degrees Celsius in Banihal, 0.3 degrees Celsius below normal, 13.0 degrees Celsius over normal in Batote, 0.2 degrees Celsius below normal in Katra, and 1.9 degrees Celsius below normal in Bhaderwah. The temperature in Leh, Ladakh, dropped to 1.4 degrees, he said. (GNS)
