The 12-year-old girl and two other children perished after they went into a pond to get their slippers.

Officials in the Kupwara district of north Kashmir confirmed this afternoon that they had located the body of a little girl who had drowned in the river Pohru in the hamlet of Jaggerpora on Saturday.

The corpse of Ronak Jan, 12, daughter of Abdul Jabbar Payer, resident of Sulkote Kupwara, was discovered in Awatkul, about 3 Kilometres from the event scene, after days of intensive search operations.

“Soon after the incident was reported, a search operation was launched by Police, SDRF, NDRF, Army, and MARCOS with active assistance by locals to trace the girl”, they claimed, adding that no clue was discovered till today afternoon.

Ronak Jan, age 12, was one of three children who tragically lost their lives as they attempted to rescue a girl’s lost slippers from the river Pohru.

Timely involvement by neighbours led to the safe rescue of two of the drowning children, later identified as Zehran Javid (11) son of Javid Ahmad Dar, a resident of Jagerpora, and Sadiya Fayaz (9) daughter of Fayaz Ahmad Mir, a resident of Mughalpora Nagri.
