According to commuters in Srinagar, the government’s inability to fix the crumbling Khayam-Nowpora road has caused worry.

The road from Khayam to Nowpora, according to a group of commuters, residents, and merchants, was excavated for the installation of drainage pipes more than five months ago. The road remains in disrepair despite the installation of pipes, increasing the likelihood of accidents.

From Khayam to Nowpora, there are potholes across the whole route. As a result of a crumbling road caving in and trapping cars for hours, locals claim that passengers often narrowly avoided death. According to them, potholes and an uneven surface caused even electric cars to tip over numerous times after losing balance. Commuters and pedestrians’ lives are now at risk because manholes have been left exposed, they said.

Many business owners said that the dust from the deteriorated road at Khayam and Nowpora had harmed their health. According to a local named Ajaz Ahmad, many business owners get chest illnesses as a result of the dust that comes from the road when cars drive over it.

“The road transforms into marsh during rainstorms, when cars are often hit. It is ironic that a major thoroughfare heading into the city centre has been allowed to deteriorate. Traffic bottlenecks are caused by poor road conditions, which impact how vehicles travel.

The situation is being investigated, the locals request of Deputy Commissioner Srinagar.
