New York, Sep 9: To create the biggest image-based artificial intelligence (AI) models capable of combating cancer, tech giant Microsoft has partnered with Paige, a supplier of digital pathology.

According to the firms, the new AI model has billions of parameters and is orders of magnitude bigger than any previous image-based AI model that is currently in use.

As the foundation for the subsequent generation of clinical applications and computational biomarkers that push the limits of oncology and pathology, it will help in capturing the nuanced complexity of cancer.

Both common malignancies and unusual cancers, which are notoriously difficult to diagnose, may be detected by the AI model.

“We are developing brand-new AI models that will provide hitherto unattainable insights into the pathogenesis of cancer. Desney Tan, Vice President and Managing Director, Microsoft Health Futures, stated in a statement that unleashing AI’s potential would revolutionise healthcare and enhance lives.

Over one billion photos from 500,000 pathology slides across several cancer kinds were used to create the first big foundation model by Paige, a worldwide leader in end-to-end digital pathology solutions and clinical AI.

From its unrivalled petabyte-scale clinical data library, Paige is combining up to four million digitised microscope slides from various cancer kinds in the next phase of development. Paige will train the programme at scale using Microsoft’s cutting-edge supercomputing infrastructure before utilising Azure to roll it out to hospitals and labs throughout the world.
