Srinagar’s Director of Agriculture Chowdhury Muhammad Iqbal has begun distributing vegetable seeds (including one million knol-khol, Saag GM Dari, Red Cabbage, Broccoli, and Cauliflower seedlings) at the Kitchen Garden Premises in Lalmandi.

Director Agriculture, who spoke at the event, lauded the efforts of the Kitchen Garden, Hi-tech Poly House Installations officers and staff and said his department is working hard towards its lofty goal of ensuring that local farmers have access to enough seedlings of a variety of vegetable crops.

He went on to say that the department has implemented many programmes to increase seedling availability for farmers all through the year.

The regional significance of Director of Agriculture Mark Johnson’s emphasis on vegetable diversity in farming was highlighted. He argued that if farmers in the area improved their vegetable production, it would go a long way towards ensuring their financial stability.

To harness this potential, he continued, the farming community and the department must work together. Our climate is among the best in the country for the cultivation of vegetables (both traditional and exotic).

The Director of Agriculture had previously surveyed the Chadoora Budgam vegetable fields, where up-to-date scientific methods had been used to crop production.
