New Delhi, September 29: A week after being approved by both Houses of Parliament, the Women’s Reservation Bill has now become a law thanks to President Droupadi Murmu.

On September 21, the measure was approved in Parliament.

The new legislation grants women 33 percent of the seats in the Lok Sabha and state legislatures.

The women’s reservation bill was signed by Vice President and Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar on Friday before being sent to President Murmu for her approval.

During a special session of Parliament earlier this month, the Lok Sabha approved the Constitution Amendment Bill with almost unanimous support and the Rajya Sabha with unanimous support.

However, since the new legislation calls for the completion of the decadal census survey and seat delimitation, it may be put into effect by 2029.

Congress-led opposition has pushed for its swift adoption.
