Baramulla, September 4: Baramulla officials urged police to create an intelligence network to locate drug trafficking hubs.

A 10th meeting of the District Level Committee of Narcotics Coordination (NCORD) was held today at Dak Bungalow Baramulla under the chairmanship of Deputy Commissioner (DC) Baramulla, Dr Syed Sehrish Asgar, to discuss the comprehensive strategy to combat the menace of drug abuse in the district as well as to evaluate the action taken by the concerned departments with regard to control measures.

The district’s drug control measures were discussed during the conference, and the individual departments’ performance was reviewed. Additionally, it covered in detail the prevalence of drug misuse, problem regions, demographics of addicts by age group, drug abuse hotspots, and the condition of drug treatment facilities in the Baramulla district.

Dr. Sehrish called for zero tolerance towards drug abusers in the district at the meeting and reviewed the execution of the district-wide ban on the sale of cigarettes within 200 metres of all educational institutions.

The DC went on to say that in order to combat the drug epidemic, everyone engaged must band together and cooperate to improve drug abusers’ chances of recovery.

Dr. Sehrish also urged the Youth Services and Sports Department to make sure that youth groups participate in different initiatives designed to aid in the elimination of the drug problem.

The DC also emphasised the need of launching extensive awareness programmes in colleges and high schools to inform students about the risks and drawbacks of drug usage.

Aside from 170 kanal of poppy growing already being eradicated, the DC was also told that other medical businesses in the area had been shut for breaking government regulations. The conference was told that FIRs had also been filed against those responsible for the most recent drug addiction campaigns.

In addition to other key representatives from other ministries, the conference included Additional Deputy Commissioners for Baramulla and Sopore, Zahoor Ahmad Raina and Shabir Ahmad Raina, Assistant Commissioner for Revenue, Sub Divisional Magistrate Pattan, and Uri.
