Ronaldo’s close-range drive in the 89th minute was first ruled out for offside, but the goal was allowed when the VAR playback proved he was fractionally onside. Ronaldo had to wait two minutes to celebrate the victory. He now has 123 goals for Portugal, becoming him the all-time best goalscorer in international competition.

Cristiano Ronaldo was supposed to score on the night that was so meaningful to him, but his goals were disallowed many times for being offside.

The match was the 38-year-old football star’s 200th appearance for his country.

Only 584 male players have played 100 or more games for their country, with Ronaldo being the first to play 200.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner’s goal sent Portugal to the tournament’s greatest start in its history.

When asked about reaching 200 international appearances, Ronaldo told the media, “I am so happy, it’s that kind of moment you never expect.” Ronaldo exclaimed with pleasure as he thanked fans, authorities, teammates, and the people of Iceland for their support: “To be in the Guinness World Record is an unbelievable achievement, it is amazing.”

The star player remarked that scoring the game-winning goal elevated the significance of the event.
