In New Delhi: According to a study released on Thursday, 93 of the 230 MLAs in Madhya Pradesh—52 from the opposition Congress and 39 from the governing BJP—have criminal charges pending against them.

All 230 sitting MLAs’ disciplinary, financial, and other background information was examined by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) and Madhya Pradesh Election Watch.

According to the research, “Of the 230 sitting MLAs studied, 93 (or 40%) have filed criminal charges against themselves, of whom 47 (20%) have filed significant criminal charges.

Additionally, it said that one sitting MLA had designated murder cases as falling under IPC Section 302.

The study also noted that six currently serving MLAs had reported attempted murder charges under IPC Section 307.

According to the report, sitting MLAs have filed complaints under IPC Section 354 in relation to crimes against women.

Additionally, it said that one (33%) out of every three Independent MLAs, 39 (30%) out of 129 BJP, 52 (54%) out of 97 Congress, and the only BSP MLA had each disclosed criminal charges against themselves in their affidavits.

According to the research, 20 (16%) of the 129 members of the governing BJP, 25 (26%) of the 97 members of the Congress, the lone member of the BSP, and one out of every three members of the Independent MLAs had claimed severe criminal charges against themselves in their affidavits.

The 230-member Assembly’s election is slated for November 17, and the results will be tallied on December 3.
