Colombo, September 6: Former Sri Lankan cricketer Sachithra Senanayake was arrested on match-fixing accusations after appearing before the Special Investigation Unit (SIU) of the Sports Ministry on Wednesday.

He will be brought before a judge later today. The Colombo Magistrate issued an order last month prohibiting the 38-year-old from leaving Sri Lanka for three months.

The AG had ordered the SIU to prepare criminal charges against the ex-cricketer.

During the inaugural season of the Lanka Premier League (LPL) in 2020, Senanayake reportedly attempted to rig matches by contacting two other players over the phone in Dubai.

The ex-cricketer, who took 78 international wickets in 73 white-ball matches for Sri Lanka, has refuted all the charges, calling them fake and without foundation.

Senanayake attempted to avoid arrest in 2021 by filing for anticipatory bail with the Colombo Magistrate, but his request was denied.
